Lyle Suter's most prominent artwork is his portrait of Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK Jr.) for the new MLK Jr. hospital in Los Angeles, CA in 1972. Our exhibit shows visitors how the portrait unveiling was covered in news articles and photos.

In 1963 Lyle Suter was selected to paint Dr. Drew's portrait for Charles Drew Middle School in Los Angeles, CA. Dr. Drew is renowned for improving WWII blood storage saving thousands of lives. Our exhibit displays photos of the portrait unveiling.

Private Lyle Suter, Artist, Delta Stage WWII Army Newspaper in Marseille, France from June 1945 to January 1946. This exhibit displays Mr. Suter's cartoons and illustrations published in the Delta Stage at the age of 20-21 years old for 50,000 troops.

In 1948 New York City Lyle Suter won 2nd Place ($500) in a national art contest by Society of Illustrators. Mr. Suter’s painting was donated to the Brooklyn Dodgers, featured in a 1953 exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum and reported in 2 news publications.

“I was transferred from my combat Engineer Company in Tent City to Artist, Delta Stage Newspaper, Marseille, France. I stayed with our staff from its 1st publication to the final one in January 1946. It was the most memorable period in my life.”

Marilyn Monroe's portrait was painted and lent by Lyle Suter in 1966 for the beauty contest of the Los Angeles Press Club for stage decoration. Monroe was Ms. L.A. Press Club 1948. Our exhibit displays event photos by Mr. Suter & L.A. Press Club photos and news articles by their 8 Ball newspaper.

Lyle Suter, Art Teacher & Dept. Chairman, voted 1 of 6 most influential in school history in 1999. He taught & promoted student art, painted and sketched scores of students & faculty, helped integrate the school and was prolific in photographing students and school activities.

The other videos are a potpourri featuring the Suter Comedy Brunch and related to Beverly Hills High

Mr. Suter painted a portrait of James Baldwin after meeting him in 1970 when the author came to Beverly High to speak to students at an assembly. This exhibit chronicles their meeting, Mr. Baldwin's literary accomplishments and the donation of Mr. Baldwin's portrait to the Hughes Library in Queens, New York.

In 1968 Lyle Suter painted Yvonne Braithwaite Burke, USA House of Representatives (1973 - 1979), Los Angeles City County Supervisor (1992 - 2008) and member of McCone Commission charged with investigating the cause of the Watts Riots in 1965.

In 1974 Lyle Suter painted the portrait of Gilbert Lindsay, Los Angeles (L.A.) City Council (1962 - 1990). Mr. Lindsay was the first Black member of the L.A. City Council and helped build the downtown area of L.A. into a major metropolitan center.

In 1973 Lyle Suter was commissioned to paint three portraits of Founder J. Alfred Cannon, M.D., Executive Director Hiawatha Harris, M.D. and Financier Seniel Ostrow for Central City Community Mental Health Center located in Los Angeles, California.

Produced over 60 years, this exhibit includes beautiful oil paintings composed of peaceful landscapes, iconic images and classic 1950s New York City with caricatures and dynamic black and white line illustrations. Many are available in the Gift Shop.

Lyle Suter's portrait of Martin Luther King, Jr. and other works were displayed in an art exhibit on December 1, 1971 at Colonial Savings & Loan in Los Angeles, CA. Over 200 persons attended the event reported in the Los Angeles Times.

Francis Farmer, Sr., Civil Rights & Elderly Advocate

Lyle Suter's 1986 portrait of Francis Farmer is displayed in the Francis Farmer, Sr. Apartments in Rochester, PA. Mr. Farmer was influential in community and political affairs in Beaver County, PA from his barbershop platform. He is memorable as a civil rights pioneer and advocate for the elderly.

Displayed in this exhibit are portraits by Lyle Suter of family members in the Los Angeles communities of View Park, Baldwin Hills & Beverly Hills from the 1960s to 1980s. Family portraits comprised most of the art sold by Mr. Suter. Also displayed are family photos taken by Mr. Suter to assist the painting of his portraits.

Lyle Suter's 1976 portrait of Mrs. Butler has been displayed in the Georgia Capital & Education Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia. Mrs. Butler founded the National Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers Association in 1926. President Hoover appointed her to his 1929 White House Conference on Child Health and Protection

Lyle Suter is one of the greatest American Artists of the 20th Century specializing in portraits and illustration. His credentials feature 11 portraits in public and private buildings in 4 states, including Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) at MLK Jr. Outpatient Center in Los Angeles, CA. He sold 150+ paintings of families, politicians & civil rights leaders, served as Artist for the Delta Stage WWII Army Newspaper in 1945, was voted 1 of 6 Most Influential people in the history of Beverly Hills High School as Art Teacher & Department Chairman in 1999, produced art over 60 years and had news articles and/or photos in 20+ publications. Mr. Suter was trained at New York University and Pratt Art Institute in New York City where he won 2nd Place in a 1948 national art contest with his Scene At Ebbets Field, later donated to the Brooklyn Dodgers and featured in Pratt's 125th anniversary publication.
